Widnes Vikings are delighted to announce that Joe Lyons has signed a new one-year deal with the club ahead of the 2021 season.
Joe is a product of the club’s Academy system, having worked his way through every stage of the pathway to make his First Team debut, with his journey starting in the Widnes Vikings Development Squad.
The 22-year-old appeared in all seven fixtures of the 2020 season before the campaign ended prematurely, scoring three tries while featuring at both halfback and fullback.
His First Team debut came during the 2018 Super 8s campaign, with an impressive display against Leeds Rhinos at the DCBL Stadium.
2019 was Joe’s breakthrough season, as he established himself as Danny Craven’s partner at halfback with a further 25 appearances, finishing the season with seven tries.
That season also marked his induction into Club 20 against Barrow Raiders, becoming the 15th player to progress through the Academy and make 20 appearances for the First Team.
Joe has currently made 36 appearances for his hometown club, crossing for 10 tries.
On signing a new deal with the Vikings, Joe Lyons commented, “I’m delighted to have signed a new contract with the club ahead of 2021. Obviously the club is close to my heart, and getting the opportunity to continue playing for my hometown club is a great honour.
“It was disappointing the way the season came to an end so early, although it was the right decision in order to keep everyone safe. My focus now is on getting myself ready for whenever we’re given the green light to return to training, and be best prepared to hit the ground running in 2021.
“Tim has used me in a couple of positions already since he arrived at the club, and my aim is to help out the team in the best way I can. I’ll be looking to keep a regular spot in the team and build on my performances from this season, and hopefully we can enjoy a successful year.
“Some of the signings that have already been made are exciting, so if you combine those with the lads we have kept I think we have a really good squad coming together.
“We’re all looking forward to getting back into training and eventually back playing now, because it has been a long-time since we were together as a group. It will be a great occasion once we’re able to run out in front of our fans again, and I can’t wait to hear them loud and proud in 2021.”
Joe Lyons is sponsored by Musical Allsorts for the 2020 season.
