Biography

Born in Whiston and growing up in Widnes the former pupil at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic High School played his junior rugby for Halton Farnworth Hornets and West Bank Bears, before joining his hometown club’s Scholarship programme. After subsequently progressing through the St Helens Academy he made his senior debut for the Saints, against the Vikings, in 2014 and gained more experience with loan moves to Rochdale and Batley before making nearly 100 appearances for Sheffield before moving on to the Broncos. Having represented Wales in the European and World Cup competitions ‘Foz’ names his father and Mark Aston as the major influences on his career, while citing his Super League debuts, for St Helens and London, and playing in the World Cup as his career highlights. 2022 saw Matty claim his 250th career point before again representing Wales in the World Cup and chalking up his 50th appearance for the Vikings in 2023. His ambition is to be the best player he can be and to be remembered. Away from rugby, he enjoys playing golf.
