Widnes Vikings 6-36 Leigh Centurions

Widnes 6 - 36 Leigh

Widnes suffer home defeat to Leigh

The Vikings lost out to a strong Leigh Centurions side in Round 8 of the Betfred Championship, despite a sole try from Adam Lawton.

Leigh forged ahead after six minutes, Ata Hingano pouncing on a fumbled catch from a kick to get the visitors in front.

The Vikings defended well throughout the first period with the Centurions putting pressure on the home line several times, Joe Lyons gathering a couple of threatening kicks.

However, the visitors edged further ahead on the hooter, Ed Chamberlain finding space out on the Widnes left edge to inflict a harsh blow on the Vikings just before the break.

Eight minutes after the break Leigh extended their lead, Nene Macdonald finding another gap in the Widnes line on the home right this time to put down in the corner.

Widnes got on the scoreboard just before the hour mark, Adam Lawton collecting the ball after a mistake from Joe Mellor to score.

Leigh responded almost immediately though, John Asiata getting on the end of a grubber to touch down under the sticks.

Just three minutes later, the Centurions were over again, former Vikings Krisnan Inu putting down in the corner after a slick move from the visitors.

Another former Centurion scored with ten minutes left, Joe Mellor getting over in front of the travelling fans after a break from Edwin Ipape.

Despite a valiant effort from the Vikings throughout, Leigh proved too strong in the end winning by a final scoreline of 6-36.
