Morgan McWhirter signs new one-year deal

Australian forward Morgan McWhirter has signed a new one-year deal to keep him at Widnes Vikings for the 2027 season.

The 24-year-old has become a popular figure within the squad and the local community, combining his playing commitments with a role within the Vikings Sports Foundation.

He arrived part-way through last season from French side Limoux Grizzlies and has gone on to make 30 appearances, bringing energy and impact to the forward pack.

McWhirter said: “I’m stoked. It’s been something that’s been coming for a little bit of time now.

“I’m extremely grateful to the club for the opportunity to stay around for a little longer, and I’m really excited for what lies ahead.

“This club gave me an opportunity when not many others were willing to give me one, coming from France as a bit of an unknown. I want to repay them with a good couple of years of rugby

“Having the job with the foundation helps keep me occupied around footy. It’s one of those gigs that’s very rewarding. Everyone seems to give good reviews and enjoying what I’m doing for the town, so it helps me and it helps them.

“With the crew here, the coaching staff and the fans and the facilities it was an easy decision.”

McWhirter scored his first try for the club in an away win at London Broncos last season, followed by another in a home win over Batley, and has also crossed for two tries this season in wins over Dewsbury and Sheffield.

Head coach Allan Coleman said: “He’s brilliant within the community, first and foremost. He’s brilliant with the kids, they all love him. I think we need that identity in schools that the Aussie loves being around the town, so the kids love the Aussie!

“He’s really energetic. He brings a real level of competition at training. And on the field, he’s just full of energy all the time.

“If the team’s down, he just lifts it up. He brings a big smile to the room and he’s a very good rugby player. He’s very knowledgable, he can play multiple positions so it was key we got him done.”
