Aimee Wood, Captain of the Vikings women’s team, is set to run the London Marathon later this month for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
JDRF is the main organisation that funds type 1 diabetes research, in the hope of finding a cure.
Aimee is running for them as in March 2022, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after she became unwell and went very close to going into a diabetic coma.
In October Aimee spent 4 days in intensive care before giving birth to her son, Oliver. She went into diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which is a serious complication of type 1 diabetes.
She said: “The London marathon has always been on my bucket list.
“If you’re going to run a marathon it has to be the biggest one, which is London. So for the past 10 years or so I’ve always put my name in the ballot.
“I am running for this charity as all money raised goes towards funding research and helping people like myself who have the condition in the hope of one day finding a cure.”
