Widnes Vikings were victorious in their final home game of the season, beating Workington Town 40-12.
The Vikings started in fine form, with Frank Sergent opening the scoring after just two minutes.
The winger found himself in acres of room down the left flank and dived in at the corner to give Widnes the advantage.
Eight minutes later, the Vikings had their second try of the game.
Some rapid interplay between Danny Richardson and Tom Gilmore diverted Workington’s attention away from the incoming run of Kieran Taylor. The 25-year-old got hold of the ball and powered his way in behind to get it over the line.
24 minutes into the first half, Allan Coleman’s side stretched their lead further when Jordan Johnstone picked out Nick Gregson who ran under the posts.
Kieran Taylor then went on to score his second try of the afternoon following an excellent solo run from Jumah Sambou. The centre got his side up the field and from the following set, Taylor managed to bundle it over the line.
Five minutes before the end of the opening 40, Gregson claimed his brace when he broke through the Workington line, having been found by Jack Owens.
The Vikings started the second half almost exactly as they’d began the first, as four minutes in, Sergent was once again left alone on the left flank and able to add to Widnes’ tally.
The visitors got their first try of the match an hour in when Jake Carter broke the line to run under the sticks.
Yet, the Vikings proved they weren’t letting Workington have any sniff of a comeback when two minutes later, Owens picked out Sam Wilde who ran in behind to score.
66 minutes in, Frank Sergent claimed his hattrick. Once again, Owens made the move after he broke away down the left but selflessly played it into Sergent who beat Zarrin Galea for pace to score unopposed.
In the final act of the game, Workington winger Harrison Jewitt broke clear, running the length of the field, to add another try for the visitors.
