Big Match Preview: Goole Vikings (A)

The Clash of the Vikings returns this Saturday as Widnes Vikings make the trip to the East Riding of Yorkshire to face Goole Vikings in the Betfred Championship (3pm kick-off).

Allan Coleman’s side will be keen to make amends after suffering back-to-back defeats against Oldham and, most recently, Doncaster, who came away from the DCBL Stadium with a 26-6 victory on Wednesday night.

It is yet another quick turnaround for the Vikings, who gear up for their third fixture in the space of a week against a Goole side buoyed by their 20-14 win at home to Rochdale Hornets last weekend.

📰 Squad news

Widnes Vikings head coach Allan Coleman has named his 21-man squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Goole Vikings in Round 19 of the Betfred Championship.

There is just one change following Wednesday’s defeat to Doncaster as Jack Houghton comes back in to replace Kieran Taylor.

🥊 The opposition

After a tough start to their inaugural campaign in the Betfred Championship, Goole have steadily been building momentum in recent weeks.

Scott Taylor’s side began the season strongly, with two victories from their opening three games, but what followed was a string of seven straight defeats in the league, one of which came at the hands of Widnes in a 54-24 loss at the DCBL Stadium at the start of March.

An 80-0 victory over North Wales Crusaders stopped the rot, and despite coming away from their next two fixtures empty-handed, Goole have won two of their last three, which included a 50-16 victory over Keighley Cougars and more recently the aforementioned victory over Rochdale.

Goole Vikings 21-man squad: Connor Barley, Brad Bullock, Tyler Craig, Frankie Dearlove, Brett Ferres, Josh Guzdek, Tom Halliday, Mackenzie Harman, Flynn Holden, Alex Holdstock, Jeylan Hodgson, Cooper Howlett, Jack Miller, Dec Murphy, Leroy Ncube, Callum Rutland, Jack Smith, Callum Shaw, Nick Staveley, Keenen Tomlinson, Liam Watts.

⏪ Record against Goole

Widnes emerged triumphant in the first-ever Clash of the Vikings against Goole in March.

A 10-try performance from Allan Coleman’s side was enough to overcome the visitors, who battled to the end in a 54-24 win at the DCBL Stadium.

The two sides will face off against each other at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds for the first time this Sunday.

Last meeting:

  • Widnes 54-24 Goole (Championship R5, 1/3/26)
