REPORT: WIDNES VIKINGS 54-24 GOOLE VIKINGS

Widnes picked up their fourth successive league victory with a dominant 54-24 victory over Goole Vikings at the DCBL Stadium.

Allan Coleman’s side ran in 10 tries from seven different scorers on a comfortable afternoon that saw them move up to second in the Betfred Championship.

Matt Fleming opened the scoring inside five minutes, collecting a looping pass from Tom Gilmore to stroll over in the corner.

The Vikings quickly tightened their grip on the contest as Dan Murray and Nick Gregson both powered over for their first tries of the season to extend the early advantage.

Fleming grabbed his second soon after, finishing a near-identical move in the right-hand corner from another Connell cut-out pass to establish a 22-point lead midway through the first half.

The result was effectively put beyond doubt on the half-hour when Nathan Connell produced a moment of magic, slicing through the defensive line and stepping the fullback for a superb solo try.

Matty Fozard added Widnes’ sixth of the afternoon following a strong break from Adam Lawton, but Goole responded before the interval through Cooper Howlett, who finished well from distance.

Widnes resumed in the same dominant fashion after the break, with Fleming completing his hat-trick after sharp link-up play involving Connell and Gilmore.

Lewis Hall was next on the scoresheet, reacting quickest after his improvised last-tackle kick was spilled by the Goole defence to claim his first try of the campaign.

Jumah Sambou then bagged his third try in two games for the club as he took a neat offload from Fleming to score out wide.

Howlett grabbed his second of the afternoon for the visitors, but the loudest cheer followed soon after when Murray powered over for a rare brace to bring up the half-century.

Goole battled to the end and were rewarded with late tries from Shaw and Barley, but Widnes remained in full control to secure an impressive 54-24 victory.

We turn our attention to a clash with Hunslet at the DCBL Stadium next Sunday. Tickets are available HERE.
