REPORT: OLDHAM RLFC 12-18 WIDNES VIKINGS

The Vikings earned a hard fought two points with an 18-12 victory over Oldham in a real arm wrestle at Bower Fold.

Widnes were first to get on the scoresheet, with Jordan Abdull opting to kick an early penalty goal.

The hosts struck back, Jake Bibby evaded a couple of tackles just shy of the line and quickly offloaded to Brad Day who was able to crash over and put Oldham in front.

A couple of minutes before half time, The Vikings hit the front, a clever kick in behind from Abdull found Ryan Ince in the corner who was able to tap the ball down.

Abdull converted the try to give Widnes a narrow lead going into the sheds.

The Vikings were quick out the blocks in the second half, a short kick, this time from Tom Gilmore was pounced on by Matt Fleming to stretch the advantage to 8.

Oldham managed to wrestle back some of the momentum, and got their reward Kieran Dixon crossed in the corner, and converted his own try to bring The Roughyeds back within two.

The Vikings showed resilience and defended well, then three minutes from time, Ryan Ince doubled his try tally to seal the win and send the traveling fans wild behind the sticks.

Coming up for Widnes, we look ahead to the ‘Clash of the Vikings’ next Sunday against Goole at the DCBL Stadium.
