REPORT: WORKINGTON TOWN 10-22 WIDNES VIKINGS

The Vikings got back to winning ways this afternoon with a hard-fought 22-10 victory over Workington Town at the Fibrus Community Stadium.

Allan Coleman’s side were made to battle throughout a physical contest, but a strong final 20 minutes proved decisive as the Vikings secured a valuable two points on the road.

Widnes opened the scoring through Matt Fleming, who showed great awareness on the last tackle to kick ahead for himself and touch down for the try.

The hosts responded on the 20-minute mark when Zarrin Galea claimed a high kick before beating two defenders and racing 70 metres to level the scores.

The Vikings were quick to regain control, however, with Fleming crossing for his second of the afternoon. Ryan Ince broke down the left-hand side after some neat play before finding his centre in support, who finished to restore the six-point lead.

Mike Butt went close to extending the advantage before the interval but was forced into touch short of the line, meaning the Vikings went into the break 12–6 ahead.

Workington started strongly after half-time and were rewarded when Tuarae Rawhiti latched onto a kick in behind to score, cutting the deficit to just two points and raising hopes of a home comeback.

Any doubts were eased with 20 minutes to go as Max Roberts powered his way over following a smart pass from Matty Fozard, twisting through the defence to give Widnes some breathing space.

The result was sealed shortly afterwards when the Vikings shifted the ball left, allowing Ryan Ince to finish in the corner and put the contest beyond doubt.
