THUNDERBOLT: PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Vikings Women’s captain Aimee Wood is taking on an incredible personal challenge this February, committing to run 100 kilometres to raise vital funds and awareness for Type 1 diabetes research.

Aimee, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in March 2022, has been living with the condition for almost three years. Since her diagnosis, every day has involved carefully managing blood sugar levels, counting carbohydrates, and navigating the physical and mental challenges that come with the condition.

“Living with Type 1 diabetes isn’t just a diagnosis – it’s a full-time battle,” Aimee said. “From finger pricks to insulin injections, it’s something that never switches off. It can be exhausting, both physically and mentally.”

Despite these challenges, Aimee continues to lead by example on and off the pitch. Her latest challenge will see her run 100km throughout February, all in support of Breakthrough Type 1 Diabetes Research, helping to fund life-changing research and support those living with the condition.

By sharing her story, Aimee hopes to raise greater awareness of the realities of living with Type 1 diabetes, while also inspiring others to support the search for a cure.

“I’m doing this to raise awareness and funds for a future where Type 1 diabetes is a thing of the past,” she added. “Every step, every donation, and every bit of support makes a difference.”

The club is incredibly proud of Aimee’s commitment and determination, both as captain and as an ambassador for an important cause. Her challenge reflects the resilience, leadership, and passion she brings to Widnes Vikings Women every day.
