Widnes Vikings got the 2022 season off to a flyer with a resounding away victory over London Broncos, Ryan Ince crossing four times on his competitive return as well as tries from Olly Davies, Joe Edge and Lloyd Roby wrapping up the points.
Matt Fleming, Olly Davies, Aaron Brown, Tyler Dupree and Liam Bent all came in for their Vikings debuts while returnees Sam Wilde, Matty Fozard and Ryan Ince made their first competitive appearance back in black and white.
Lloyd Roby came in at fullback after Jack Owens was forced out due to injury.
The Vikings began the game with a dominant first set, and made it count after working it out right to Olly Davies who spotted a gap and charged through it to put Widnes into an early lead on his debut. Joe Edge, on kicking duties for the day in Jack’s absence, duly converted to put the Vikings into a 6-0 lead after just a couple of minutes.
Ryan Ince also bagged on his returning debut with a spectacular acrobatic effort from the right side in the corner to extend the lead to 10.
The Vikings worked the shortside on their fourth attacking set in the London half and scored their third try, Joe Edge sent over from a brilliant spot by Roby.
London pinched one back after Jude Ferreira chased a grubber and got down for the home side’s first try of the game.
Widnes’ lead was soon extended again though, after Danny Craven broke and made big yards after selling his man a lovely dummy, before sending Roby over the line.
Incey was over on the wing again on the hooter, with Edge converting to send Widnes into a 20-point lead at the break.
Dean Parata pulled one back after the break for the hosts, edging through the Widnes defence to put another on the board.
Ryan Ince was over for his hat-trick not long after, though, after yet another strong attacking set to work it out right from the Vikings.
London pulled another back with 10 minutes remaining, Lameck Juma crossing after a mistake from the Vikings inside their 20, but the Vikings ultimately came away with a resounding win on the opening day.
