Following on from the announcement that Mersey Storm wheelchair team will become part of the Vikings family from October 2023, Head of Operations Chris Hamilton commented;
“The Storm and everybody connected with the team have worked tirelessly over the years, not to only maintain the presence of a team, but to be successful: winning trophies and creating playing opportunities, both at club level and by producing international players for all four home nations.”
“Running any club at any level requires dedicated people, and the Storm certainly have plenty of those. However, with the current economic climate, things have undoubtedly become harder each year, and on the back of that, the Head of the Widnes Vikings Foundation, Cheryl McGivern, started talks with the Storm to see if there was a desire to join with us and strengthen the club.
“The Storm members voted to do just that, and therefore we are delighted to announce the partnership that will hopefully see the wheelchair team go from strength to strength.
“The Vikings Foundation was also able to obtain funding for some new wheelchairs for the side, and it was great to see the players’ excitement when they were trying them out at the Storm’s presentation night last Friday, held at the DCBL Stadium.
“We want to place on record our sincere thanks to all of the hard work the Storm have done, both on and off the field, and we look forward to working with them as we move forward under the Widnes Vikings banner.”
If anybody is interested in joining the team, pre season starts on 13 October, at Kingsway leisure Centre, please contact the Vikings on 0151 495 2250 or via enquiries@widnesvikings.co.uk
