Tribute: John Kear

Widnes Vikings are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former head coach, John Kear.

John was appointed head coach in June 2022 and spent a year with the club before departing in June 2023. He was one of rugby league’s most respected and admired figures, whose passion for the game, leadership and unwavering commitment left a lasting impact wherever he coached.

During his time at Widnes Vikings, John brought experience, professionalism and enthusiasm to the club, earning the respect of players, staff, supporters and the wider rugby league community.

Through his various roles within the sport, including his much-valued media and commentary work, his knowledge and love of rugby league remained evident right through to the Challenge Cup coverage this weekend.

Beyond his achievements in the game, John will be remembered as a true gentleman of rugby league. His contribution to the sport over several decades was immense, and his legacy will continue to be felt throughout the game for many years to come.

On behalf of everyone connected with Widnes Vikings, we extend our heartfelt condolences to John’s family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

Our thoughts are with all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him, and especially with his wife, Dawn.

Once a Viking, always a Viking. Rest in peace, John.
