Team Talk – Newcastle Thunder (A)

2022 Widnes Vikings Team Talk - Leigh Centurions home preview

It’s time to take a look at how the squad has come out of Monday night’s defeat at Newcastle with a look ahead to our Good Friday clash at home to Leigh Centurions…

Monday night saw Newcastle get the better of the Vikings in the North East, with the difference in completion rate playing a large part in the loss.

Thunder forged ahead in the first half with a try from Sam Halsall 20 minutes into the contest, extending their lead with another from Gideon Boafo in the second half.

Widnes pulled one back through Adam Lawton with ten minutes to go but ultimately couldn’t bring the points back home, with Jake Shorrocks adding a late penalty goal to take the final score to 12-6.

Jake Spedding limped off with a leg injury in the second period, and will be assessed this week to know the full extent of the damage.

Tyler Dupree missed out with a low-grade hamstring injury and is making progress in his rehabilitation. He is now back running and could return for the Batley Bulldogs home game later this month or the trip to Featherstone Rovers on the first day of May.

Aaron Brown also missed the game after suffering a broken toe in training. He will hopefully be in contention to return against Batley on the 24th.

Danny Craven’s rehabilitation is ongoing, and his return to play is scheduled for Batley or Featherstone also.

Ollie Brookes is also continuing his rehab, but is unlikely to return for Leigh. The winger should be back in the picture to face Batley.

Levy Nzoungou and Shane Grady are long-term absentees and will continue their rehab with our strength and conditioning staff.

Dec Gregory, Lewis Hulme, Brad Holroyd, Will Tilleke, Joe Edge and Liam Bent will all be available for the Leigh game, all going well with training this week and next leading up to the Good Friday clash.

The Vikings will be looking to get back to winning ways on home soil, with a strong crowd behind us to buoy us on against a strong Centurions side.

The team will need the strong support shown by Widnes fans home and away so far this season, through the good and bad, as we hope to turn the tide and return to form.
