Jordan Johnstone commits future to club

Widnes Vikings are excited to announce that hooker Jordan Johnstone has signed a new two-year contract extension.

The 28-year-old Cumbrian is an adopted son of Widnes, and the new deal, running until at least the end of 2028, will take him into 10 years of playing for the club.

Head coach Allan Coleman said: “I am over the moon to get Jordan done. He’s a big leader for me and the team, and by getting him over the line it sends a big statement out about our intentions now and for the future.

“He’s a great blend of experience but still has that hunger for the younger players coming through. He leads by example, on and off the field.

“It was a no-brainer and we needed to get it done. He’s a massive part of now and the future of the club.”

Johnstone first joined the club’s academy system via its link with the RFL’s Cumbria academy in 2015 and has gone on to make 138 appearances for the Vikings in two spells. In between, he played in Super League for Hull FC and Castleford.

He made his Super League debut for Widnes in 2016 against Catalans, earning him the heritage number 1077.

Johnstone said: “There’s no place I’d rather be, I couldn’t see myself playing rugby anywhere else at this moment. I owe it to the club to give them my best years of rugby, and hopefully that’s what’s ahead.

“I’m enjoying having more responsibility now in the middle of the field and playing long minutes, and it helps when we’re playing well.”
