BIG MATCH PREVIEW: DONCASTER (CHAMPIONSHIP R7)

The Vikings go in search of a sixth successive win in the Betfred Championship away at Doncaster this Sunday (3pm).

Following wins on the road at Oldham and Workington, as well as home wins over North Wales, Goole and Hunslet, Allan Coleman’s side currently sit second in the table but face a tough test at the Eco-Power Stadium.

📰 SQUAD NEWS

Sam Wilde is back in the squad after missing the last five games through injury, and he has scored three tries in three appearances so far this season.

Jordan Johnstone will make his 200th career appearance if selected.

🥊 THE OPPOSITION

Doncaster coach Richard Horne has named his 21-man squad, which includes the return of former England international centre Reece Lyne.

Luis Johnson made a solitary appearance for the Vikings back in 2019, appearing in a win over Rochdale, while Papua New Guinean Watson Boas is due to make his 100th appearance for the Dons.

Dons 21-man squad: Tom Holmes, Reece Lyne, Cory Aston, Connor Robinson, Brad Knowles, Greg Burns, Suaia Matagi, Sam Smeaton, Alex Sutcliffe, Jacob Jones, Loui McConnell, Jordan Baldwinson, Muizz Mustapha, Edene Gebbie, Connor Jones, Tyla Hepi, Luis Johnson, James Glover, Watson Boas, Mitieli Vulikijapani, Titus Gwaze.

Record against Doncaster:

The Vikings were winners in this fixture last season, in what was Allan Coleman’s 100th game in charge. Cai Taylor-Wray scored a memorable try on dual-registration from Warrington, while Ryan Ince crossed for a brace of tries in a 26-22 victory back in March 2025.

The last meeting came at the DCBL Stadium back in July, and was one to forget for the Vikings as the Dons survived two red cards to record a win. That is one of only two Dons victories in the last 10 meetings between the two sides.

Gavin Dodd set the Widnes club record for most points in a match when he scored 38 points away at Doncaster in a 90-4 win in June 2007.

Last five meetings:

  • Widnes 16-20 Doncaster (Championsip R18, 20/7/25)
  • Doncaster 22-26 Widnes (Championship R4, 23/3/25)
  • Doncaster 30-14 Widnes (Championship R24, 15/9/24)
  • Widnes 16-14, Doncaster (Championship R7, 5/5/24)
  • Widnes 50-16, Doncaster (Challenge Cup R3, 11/2/24)
