Kieran Dixon: Fitness levels can set us apart

Increased fitness levels could hold the key for a successful campaign, says winger Kieran Dixon.

The Vikings have won both of their opening two Betfred Championship fixtures, away at York RLFC Knights in Round 1 and then at home to Keighley Cougars last Sunday.

They were forced to leave it late to clinch the win on both occasions, and Dixon believes their ability to step up a gear in the closing stages of matches bodes well moving forward.

“Having a fit team at any point in the season is what can win you a game,” he said.

“The skill is there or thereabouts everywhere you go. A lot of it does come down to defence and how good the engines are.

“Here in pre-season, we worked quite hard on building that baseline of fitness and I think we showed that we are capable of grinding out an 80-minute game.”

Dixon has produced two bright displays since his permanent return to the club during the off-season.

With fellow winger Ryan Millar also impressing and Ryan Ince and Brad Holroyd trying to force their way into contention, the 30-year-old knows he needs to perform consistently to retain his spot in the team.

“There’s depth in numbers, and depth in talent too,” he admitted.

“You’ve got to be playing good, consistent rugby to hold down that position, and I think it’s healthy to have that competition.

“If you’re pushing each other, you’re going to be able to perform to the best of your ability each week.”

John Kear’s side will go in search of a third win of the season on Sunday when they visit Bradford Bulls, the Vikings head coach’s former club.

The Bulls have had a win and a loss so far this season, and Dixon says the squad can take plenty of confidence with them into a tough-looking Round 3 clash.

“It’s always difficult at Odsal. Bradford are a good team and always have been,” he said.

“They’re a decent side, especially at home. It’s going to be a good game, but hopefully we can make it three wins from three.

“At every away game, the support that you hear and see in the stands brings that energy. You feel the passion from them.

“It’s not just ourselves that we’re playing for. We play for the people who pay to come and watch.”
