Widnes Vikings Women picked up their first win of the 2023 season with a 26-4 triumph over Wakefield Trinity Ladies.
From start to finish, Widnes showed what everyone knew they were capable of throughout a so-far-frustrating season.
In the first five minutes Wakefield played some good rugby and it took two great tackles from Carraghan Hannon and Hannah Cleaver to prevent them scoring.
Widnes looked fully focused, and following a positive run by Chloe Hunt, they went on to cross the line for what would be the first of five tries with Jazz Mason smashing her way over.
The conversion was successful by Lauren Broadley, and within five minutes the Vikings scored again, making it 10-0.
Confidence was on a high, and some excellent team play, including a 50m run from Hannon, resulted in Mason going over for her second try to stretch the lead to 14-0.
Widnes started the second half as they had finished the first, and it wasn’t long before Anaia Nulty had a try to her name, converted by Broadley.
The Vikings were now playing some of their best rugby of the season in the glorious sunshine, and it was fitting that they scored another try through Ellie Reid, with Lauren Broadley again adding the 2 points.
With Widnes camped out on the Wakefield try-line and pushing for their sixth of the afternoon, the Wakefield centre picked up a loose ball and looked to be scoring a length of the field try, but Broadley had other ideas and was able to bring her down 20m short of the line.
This was a credit to her commitment, as at 26-0 up with a minute to go, most teams would have watched the centre claim her glory.
Wakefield did manage to get on the scoreboard with the last play of the game, but this did not put a dampener on a great team performance.
Verdict
Shout out to Jazz Mason for her two tries, but Sunday’s outstanding performance has to go to the entire squad for all playing with pride and commitment.
Every single one should hold their head high and take this performance into their next game.
