Widnes Vikings Women were beaten 28-0 by Stanningley in difficult conditions on Sunday afternoon.
In the extreme heat, the Vikings Women worked extremely hard from first whistle to last but couldn’t turn their pressure into points.
Stanningley got off to a flying start, going over in the corner following a misjudgement by the Vikings defence which gave the visitors a 4-0 lead.
Following this, Widnes piled on the pressure and came close when Jazz Mason spilt the ball on the Stanningley try-line. They continued to press, but it was Stanningley who scored again with a breakaway try which was converted to make it 10-0.
The Widnes players continued their positive approach, and it looked as if they were on their way to their firsts points of the game, only for the final pass to be given forward.
More Widnes pressure ensued, and having crossed the try-line, a knock on cost the home team again.
With only seconds left in the first half, Stanningley went over again, and with the successful conversion they led 16-0 at half-time, although had Widnes taken their chances they could have easily had a half-time lead.
The second half continued to be end-to-end rugby, but a number of Widnes injuries took its toll and the visitors ran in a further two tries, both of which were converted.
Verdict
A number of Widnes Vikings girls stood out in the heat, with Jazz Mason and Chloe Hunt shining in the first half and Talitha Hannon and Rebecca Murphy carrying the ball in fearlessly in the second.
However, Rachael Porter was the standout player for Widnes throughout the game. A big shout out to all the girls who gave it their all in such high temperatures.
