Widnes Vikings are pleased to announce that we will host Workington Town in our first pre-season fixture ahead of the 2024 season.
The pre-season friendly will take place at the DCBL Stadium on Sunday 7 January, with a kick-off time of 3pm.
It will be the Vikings’ first match under new head coach Allan Coleman.
On the friendly with Workington, Coleman said: “It will be a really good hit out. I think it will be very important for Workington, but also for us as well.
“It’s important for us to have a look at this new squad.
“They’ll challenge us and if you look at them, they beat some good sides last year, so they’ll be hard to beat.
“Cumbrian teams are always difficult so I’m really looking forward to that game.”
Workington Town head coach, Anthony Murray also shared his thoughts on the fixture, saying, “Widnes will be our first hit out for 2024.
“It will be a tough test but I’m looking forward to seeing how we go against a new look Widnes side.”
With the announcement of the Vikings first match of pre-season Head of Operations Chris Hamilton said: “Pre-season matches are a key part of any teams build up to the new season, and whilst that is almost like stating the obvious, it is even more so with us having a large turnover of personnel.
“The lads are really getting stuck into pre season training and always look forward to getting back on the pitch with matches rather than just training.
“This game against Workington will provide exactly the right kind of start we want as we build up to the start of the season, and of course, it will provide everybody with an opportunity to see the team in action for the very first time.
“We hope as many people as possible will come to get behind the 2024 Vikings.”
