Vacancy: Head of media

Widnes Vikings Rugby League Club is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, charismatic and dedicated head of media.

We are looking for a good storyteller, who is skilled at crafting messages that take account of all issues and perfectly capture our goals and objectives with our fans at the heart of it.

Job description

  • Salary: £21,000 – £25,000 dependent on experience
  • Type of Contract: Permanent
  • Reporting to: Head of operations
  • Location: DCBL Stadium, Cheshire and other locations
  • Hours: 37.5 hours a week – including some evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Closing Date: 11 August 2023
  • Start Date: To be discussed at interview

Job summary

Reporting to the head of operations, and working as a key member of the club, this role is pivotal in ensuring that the highest standards of communication and information are relayed both internally and externally.    

You will be tasked with driving a proactive media agenda that supports the club’s operational and commercial objectives and promotes all other activities that enhance its reputation with all relevant audiences. Additional  accountabilities for this role include:

  • Management of digital and social media output in a timely fashion and in the most appropriate way to protect the club’s reputation.
  • Creation of official stories on the club website
  • Securing the best possible coverage for all proactive media work
  • Working on projects to generate income
  • Create video content for the club’s platforms.
  • Promote and support the delivery of the club’s key

Events:

  • Generate press coverage for the club’s work
  • Daily liaison with local, regional and national media outlets
  • Editing of our monthly magazine
  • Managing any press/media enquiries
  • Maintaining the best possible relationships with all relevant media contacts
  • Staying abreast of media trends and adapt the club’s media strategy accordingly
  • Contributing to the wider objectives of the clubs aims and vision
  • Other responsibilities commensurate and appropriate for the role

Key skills

  • A proven track record in leading and delivering creative campaigns that are either commercially focused or around other key strategic objectives
  • Experience of working collaboratively with other relevant functions, social media, internal communications etc
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good attention for detail and proof-reading skills
  • Understanding of different social media platforms and tone of voice
  • Understanding how to balance competing demands and build, manage and maintain multiple stakeholder relations
  • Experience of using content management systems
  • Ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines
  • Self-motivated and ability to work on own initiative
  • Creative and ability to identify newsworthy stories
  • Excellent IT skills including use of Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop and other media applications.
  • Demonstratable excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise work load and multi task

A full, clean driving licence will be required as the role will, on occasions involve some travel.
