Let’s take a look at how the squad has come out of Sunday’s defeat in York with a view to our trip to Newcastle early next month…
The weekend saw us suffer back-to-back losses in the Betfred Championship with our Round Six defeat against York City Knights at the LNER Community Stadium.
The contest was evenly matched halfway into the first half with the score locked up at 6-6, until a breakaway try from York half back Brendan O’Hagan changed the complex of the game. York finished their sets in better positions, and backed it up with solid defence, resulting in them starting their sets in good field position.
With an overall completion of 66%, we had eight less attacking sets than York did, resulting in us defending more. This week will give us another opportunity to correct the issues we faced in the weekend’s game, giving us an opportunity to head into the Monday night game against Newcastle Thunder, live on Premier Sports.
Ste Tyrer came off with a head knock and will follow the RFL concussion protocols with the weekend off before heading into the Newcastle game in Round Seven of the Betfred Championship campaign.
Simon Finnigan will have a healthy squad to choose from, other than the long-term absentees in Levy Nzoungou and Shane Grady who are still in the rehabilitation phase of their injury recovery.
Also, Ollie Brookes is continuing his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury picked up in the Leigh game and will most likely not be available to face Newcastle. The medical staff are hoping to see him return to full fitness within the next few weeks.
Lloyd Roby was a late withdrawal from the 21-man squad after sustaining a minor injury in team run before the weekend’s game, however he will be available when we head to Kingston Park.
Danny Craven will also be looking to return to action next Monday night after missing the past four games through an injury suffered at Halifax in Round Three.
Dec Gregory, Lewis Hulme, Will Tilleke, Brad Holroyd and Jake Spedding are all available for selection at Newcastle, all being well in training leading up to the game as the squad look to work on several areas of their game to improve for Round Seven.
