Sponsor Spotlight – GMB Union

Widnes Vikings are proud to be sponsored by GMB Union for the 2020 season.

GMB Union has over 600,000 members working in every industry in every sector of the UK economy, providing help, advice and support to those members not only in their workplace, but also by campaigning and lobbying on their behalf and pursing ground breaking legal cases to re-enforce the rights of all working people and their communities.

Over the past few weeks, not only has GMB been right at the front of negotiations with government to bring about many of the schemes that have been introduced (such as 80% pay for furlough and self-employed measures), but we have continued to fight for better and more widespread use of PPE in all industries, but not least the health and care sectors.

Over the past two seasons, the GMB brand has been proudly displayed on the club’s official Training Range, as Principle Training Range Partners of Widnes Vikings.

As well as sponsoring the club’s first team GMB have also purchased training kit for the Vikings LD Super League team and have been huge supporters of the Learning Disability RL concept since its inception.

Their relationship with rugby league extends to all clubs currently playing in the professional leagues, as the Rugby League Professional Player’s Association is part of the GMB Sporting Section. They provide support on player welfare, support players in legal matters regarding contracts and also work with current and past players on their plans for life after rugby league.

GMB has members in all the key services such as: PARAMEDICS – REFUSE – CLEANERS – SECURITY STAFF –  EMERGENCY SERVICES – CARERS –  DELIVERY DRIVERS – SUPERMARKET STAFF –  NHS STAFF – FOOD PROCESSING – UTILITIES – COMMUNICATIONS – POLICE SUPPORT STAFF –  NUCLEAR – SOCIAL WORKERS – TRANSPORT –  PRISON STAFF – NURSES – KEY PUBLIC SERVICES – BORDER SECURITY and many others.

Terry Mellor, Senior Organiser at GMB Union, commented:

“We are continuing to work hard for our members in the North West, many of whom are on the frontline fighting the impact of Coronavirus or providing key supplies and services to the rest of us.

“All GMB staff are now working from home using technology to deal with the huge increase in calls and queries that we receive from concerned members on a daily basis, and when the crisis is over we will be there supporting our members as they return to work and dealing with the impact it will inevitably leave on the economy.

“GMB is proud to support a club such as the Vikings, with whom we share many values and a great sense of community spirit.

“Hopefully we will soon be back sharing our love for the great game of rugby league.

“Stay safe and take care.”
