Sam Wilde Signs Up For 2020

Widnes Vikings are delighted to announce that Sam Wilde has signed a new one-year deal ahead of the 2020 Betfred Championship season.

Wilde, 24, first joined the Vikings on a month-long loan in May 2017 from Warrington Wolves, impressing enough to earn a permanent deal at the club for the 2018 season.

Sam started his professional career at Warrington Wolves, going on to make 18 appearances, including a starting role in the 2016 Super League Grand Final defeat to Wigan Warriors.

The forward has also had spells on loan at London Broncos and Rochdale Hornets before moving to the Vikings.

The back rower has gone on to become a mainstay in the Vikings first team on the left edge, going on to make 58 appearances for the club, scoring 9 tries.

This re-signing of Sam Wilde was made possible because of contributions from members from Vikings Quids In.

Sam Wilde commented, “I’m really happy to be staying with the club for next season.

“I’ve been here a couple of years now and loved every minute of it, so I can’t wait to be back in with the boys and get going again.

“Personally, 2019 was a good year for me. I played in almost every game and I managed to get over the try-line a few times as well so I was pretty happy overall. I’m hoping that I can do more of the same next season.

“With Tim (Sheens) coming in, it’s exciting for me and the lads to be working with a coach like him. We’re building a strong squad for next season, so it’s a year I’m really looking forward to.”

“The fans have been great with me from the day that I walked through the door. I can’t wait to pull on the Widnes shirt again and play in front of them every week in 2020.”

Jason Shaw, founder of VIQI, says, “Sam had a great season for us last year. He is a big defensive player and provides a key attacking threat for our team, as showed with his try away at Rochdale.

“VIQI is keen to retain its origins and support the retention of our best players, whilst also supporting the recruitment of new players to help Tim Sheens with the re-building of his squad.

“The continued contributions given by our loyal members is absolutely critical in ensuring we can support the plans for this year and beyond. Sam Wilde is likely to play a big part as we move forward next year.

“If you are currently a member of VIQI, then thank you for playing your part in the retention of our latest signing. However, if you are not yet part of VIQI and would like to show your support to Tim and the lads, then we would be delighted to welcome you to our scheme.

“Once again, VIQI thanks you for your support.”

A huge thanks to Anne-Marie Hughes of Skin Deep Aesthetics for her continued sponsorship of Sam for the 2020 season.
