SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT – SALFORD RUM

Our Player of the Month award is proudly sponsored by Salford Rum, a brand that has quickly become one of the UK’s most exciting names in premium craft spirits.

Co-founder Tommy Gaughan sat down with us to share the story of how the brand began, what makes it unique, and why supporting Rugby League feels like a natural fit.

From a Christmas Idea to an inspiring Success Story

Tommy said: “Salford Rum was a drunken idea (all the best are, right!?) at Christmas 2017,”

“Our wives were drinking gin and had loads of local craft products to choose from, James and I were on the rums, and all we had to choose from were cheap supermarket staples with pirates and sea monsters on the bottle.

“We decided there and then to make our own… eight months later, Salford Rum was launched.”

That bold decision has since turned into one of the region’s fastest-growing spirit brands. What began as a frustration at the lack of quality options has evolved into a company recognised nationwide, stocked in outlets such as Selfridges, Co-Op, and a growing number of bars, pubs, and restaurants.

Rooted in Salford’s Heritage

When asked why they chose Salford as their brand’s identity, Tommy points to the area’s history: “When we started to research the history of rum, we saw its roots in the Caribbean and links to UK dockyards where the rums, fruits and spices would arrive from all over the world.

“We live five minutes from the docks, and the rich history is a story we wanted to tell.

“All our recipes are based on the imports that came through the docks in the 18 and 1900s, and our bottle features a doodle map of the docks as they were in 1900 by artist Dave Draws.”

This heritage focus is part of what makes Salford Rum stand out. Each bottle is filled by hand at the Dirty Old Town Distillery in Salford, combining small-batch craftsmanship with the cultural roots of the city. The result is a distinctive spirit that tells a story with every pour.

Small-Batch Quality, Big Ambitions

Unlike many mass-produced alternatives, Salford Rum is known for using high-quality ingredients in limited runs.

Tommy explained: “We focus on quality ingredients and produce in small batches. Each bottle is hand-filled at the Dirty Old Town Distillery and inspired by Salford’s heritage.”

This attention to detail has resonated with fans. In early 2025, the company smashed its first-ever crowdfunding target, raising over £300,000 in record time to fuel expansion. With new releases and special editions on the horizon, there’s plenty for rum lovers to look forward to.

Giving Back Through Rugby League

For Tommy and his co-founder James Harrison, supporting the Widnes Vikings Player of the Month award is more than just a marketing move – it’s a personal connection.

Tommy said: “James and I are Rugby League fans and both played for Leigh East into our twenties.

“As we look to grow the brand outside our core Greater Manchester area, we’re keen to do that through the sport we love. Supporting Player of the Month is a great way for us to connect with rugby fans and show our backing for local sport.”

A Brand That Shares Our Values

Asked what he hopes fans will take away from seeing Salford Rum’s name linked with the award, Tommy is clear: “We hope fans see Salford Rum as a brand that values community, tradition, and quality, much like the Vikings themselves.

“We’re excited to be part of the journey and to celebrate the achievements of the team.”

From a light-hearted Christmas idea to one of the UK’s most exciting independent rum brands, Salford Rum’s story is one of creativity, resilience, and passion. With heritage at its core and rugby close to its heart, it’s the perfect partner for our Player of the Month award.
