REPORT: YORK KNIGHTS 18-22 WIDNES VIKINGS

The Vikings returned to winning ways with a thrilling 22-18 comeback win against York Knights at the LNER Community Stadium this afternoon.

Allan Coleman’s side scored three tries in the final 15 minutes to overturn a 12-point deficit and secure a vital two points.

York started much the better of the two sides as they enjoyed a heavy spell of pressure and territory, which they eventually made pay as Fitzsimmons crashed over from close range to establish a 6-0 lead.

A Pemberton penalty allowed the hosts to stretch their lead to eight points before Joe Brown crossed out wide to make it 14-0 at the break.

The Vikings came out much stronger in the second half, getting a try back through Matty Fozard as he crashed over from close range after a quick play the ball.

Against the run of play in the second half, the hosts re-established their two-score lead as Keinhorst squeezed in at the corner.

The Vikings hit back again through Kieran Dixon as he took Tom Gilmore’s looping pass to score.

Dixon then grabbed a second shortly after as he dove in at the corner from Lloyd Roby’s cut-out pass to reduce the deficit to just two points.

The Vikings found the winner with just 3 minutes to go, moving the ball out right from the scrum to Mike Butt who cut inside to score and secure a remarkable 22-18 win.

COACHES COMMENTS

Head Coach Allan Coleman said: “The first half was probably the worst we’ve been all season but I thought it was really good, the way we responded.

“Second half I thought we were really good and very dominant, I’m just really pleased.

“We were just much smarter with the ball and asked questions of them, we started playing some shape and our kicking game improved and we got our rewards from that.”
