REPORT: WIDNES VIKINGS 30-10 BATLEY BULLDOGS

The Vikings made it back-to-back wins this afternoon with a comprehensive 30-10 victory over Batley Bulldogs at the DCBL Stadium.

Allan Coleman’s side crossed for five tries from five different scorers in a well-rounded performance.

The Vikings started brightly, breaking the deadlock inside ten minutes as Ben Condon burst down the right touchline, showing blistering pace to beat two defenders before finding the supporting Will Roberts, who crossed under the posts.

Momentum swung moments later when Condon was shown a yellow card for off-the-ball contact on Aiden McGowan.

The Bulldogs pressed during the man advantage, but the defence held firm. However, shortly after Condon’s return, Batley drew level as Emmanuel Waine powered over from close range.

With five minutes remaining, Widnes retook the lead with a fantastically worked try from Joe Edge, taking a Batley kick on his own line before linking up with Jon Bennison to race away for a length-of-the-field score to send his side in ahead at the interval.

It didn’t take long for Allan Coleman’s side to extend their advantage in the second half as Dec Patton finished off a fantastic team try that saw the ball moved from one side of the field to the other.

Max Roberts almost added another, but couldn’t gather Patton’s kick with the line open. He made amends soon after, combining neatly with brother Will to put Morgan McWhirter in under the posts.

Batley claimed a late consolation when Jack Render intercepted an Edge pass to score, but the Vikings had the final say.

Jack Owens found Matt Fleming, and the centre’s sharp footwork and strength carried him over to complete a deserved 30-10 victory.
