REPORT: WIDNES VIKINGS 28-10 SWINTON LIONS

The Vikings picked up their second win of the Championship season on Good Friday, defeating Swinton Lions 28-10 at the DCBL Stadium.

Allan Coleman’s side are now 2/2 for the league season as they ran in five tries to see off the Lions.

It was the visitors who struck first as Badrock went over following a break by Dan Abram.

The lead didn’t last long however as Rhodri Lloyd went over. A brilliantly constructed try as Ownes kicked inside on the last for Joe Lyons to gather and feed the back-rower to score against his former club.

With the scores level the Vikings began to take control of the game, deservedly going ahead through a flying finish from Ryan Ince in the corner.

It was the visitors who struck first in the second half though as Rhys Williams capitalised on a lapse of concentration from Widnes to dive over from dummy half and level the game up at 10-10.

Again though the Vikings responded quickly, this time Ant Walker bulldozed his way over from close range to re-establish our 6-point lead.

A Tom Gilmore penalty goal stretched the lead to two scores before Ryan Ince grabbed his second of the game, diving over in the corner.

With a 22-10 lead Matt Fleming was sent to the bin but stout defence from the Vikings held Swinton at bay.

Matty Fozard then darted out of dummy half to seal the win for Allan Coleman’s side 28-10.

The Vikings now turn to our first away game of the Championship season at Dewsbury Rams next Sunday (3pm)

COACHES COMMENTS

Head Coach Allan Coleman said: “I’m over the moon with the win, we needed that, it’s really important we win our home games because we want this place to become a fortress.

“I thought the fans were brilliant today, they were so encouraging and just gave us that energy.

“Performance wise I think there is still a lot to work on, I wasn’t over the moon with the performance but absolutely delighted with the win.”
