The Vikings continued their 2024 pre-season preparations this past Sunday, battling to a 22-22 draw with Whitehaven in Jack Owens’ testimonial fixture.
The Vikings scored two tries in the last five minutes of the game, as they came from behind to get a draw.
Whitehaven took an early 12-0 lead through tries from Maizen and Evans before Mike Butt crossed on his first Widnes appearance to make it 12-4 at half-time.
A Matty Fozard score five minutes into the second half put the Vikings within 2 points, following Kieran Dixon’s successful conversion.
Whitehaven answered back however with two tries of their own from Carter and Romeo to put the visitors 22-10 up.
Tom Gilmore crossed over from a scrum with less than five minutes to go, converting his own try to cut the deficit to 6.
The Vikings piled on the pressure and got their reward with just seconds remaining on the clock, as loan signing Harvey Wilson crossed underneath the posts, Gilmore then converted to make it 22-22 as the referee blew the final whistle.
Our third and final pre-season fixture sees us face Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday 26 January (7:30pm kick-off).
