REPORT: WHITEHAVEN 12-24 WIDNES VIKINGS

The Vikings made it four wins on the bounce with a 24-12 win over Whitehaven at the Ortus REC this afternoon.

It was a professional performance from Allan Coleman’s side who ran in five tries on the day to secure the two points.

Whitehaven came out of the blocks fast, scoring in the opening minute through Edene Gebbie as he capitalised on a kick that hung in the wind to gather and cross underneath the posts.

The hosts struck once again through Ryan King as he powered over from close range to give Whitehaven a 12-0 lead after 10 minutes.

After a period of back and forth, the Vikings grew into the game in the latter stages of the first half, eventually making the pressure pay through Ryan Ince as he scored in the corner following some good work by Keanan Brand to create the opportunity.

Edene Gebbie was sin-binned for a late hit on Brand in the build-up.

The Vikings then struck on the very next set as Joe Lyons dummied through a gap to score and level things up at 12-12 at the interval.

It was more of the same in the second half as Jack Owens went on his own to score out wide and give the Vikings their first lead of the game.

Tom Gilmore was next on the scoresheet as he plucked a bouncing ball out of the air with one hand to establish a two-score lead after Ince batted down a kick from Owens.

The Vikings sealed the win as Ryan Ince grabbed his second try in trademark fashion, diving in at the corner after Owens and Brand played down the blindside on the last to secure a 24-12 win.

COACHES COMMENTS

Head Coach Allan Coleman said: “It was a nightmare start but I thought we recovered really well.

“We didn’t concede a point for 70 minutes and if you look at that second half we defend five sets on our line like it’s life or death, and that’s what I ask of them.

“I’m really pleased because that was a tough win for us today.”
