REPORT: WAKEFIELD TRINITY 36-12 WIDNES VIKINGS

The Vikings fell to a 36-12 defeat to league leaders Wakefield Trinity at the DIY Kitchens Stadium this afternoon.

Allan Coleman’s side trailed by just six points with 20 minutes to go but a late surge from the hosts saw them run out comfortable winners.

Wakefield took the lead through Ky Rodwell as he collected a short pass to crash over near the posts.

The Vikings then hit back through Zac Bardsley-Rowe who showed great athleticism to beat a man and power over for his first senior try.

Gilmore missed the conversion attempt but later added a penalty goal to level things up at 6-6.

The hosts struck again on the stroke of halftime as Derrell Olpherts went over out wide after a brilliant cut-out pass from Max Jowitt.

Liam Hood then crossed early in the second half to give Wakefield a 16-6 lead, however, the Vikings hit back once more as Reagan Sumner took Jack Owens’ pass to fly in for a debut try and reduce the deficit to four.

The hosts then began to take control in the latter stages of the game as a Max Jowitt penalty saw them increase their lead to six before a try from Jermaine McGillvary provided the killer blow.

Trinity crossed for two further tries, first from Jowitt as he backed up McGillvary’s break to score before Lachlan Walmsley went on his own to seal a 36-12 win for the hosts.

The Vikings turn their attention to next Sunday’s big clash with Sheffield Eagles at the DCBL Stadium, tickets are available HERE

COACHES COMMENTS

Head Coach Allan Coleman said: “We came under a lot of pressure in that first half but I’m immensely proud of the lads, I think ultimately the intensity levels and skill levels of playing a full-time team took its toll on us.

“The players were fighting for their lives at the end but they just kept going so I can’t knock them for their effort.

“It’s no excuse from us, we came with confidence today that we could be the first team to beat them here but we couldn’t. We won’t shy away from that and we’ll learn from it.”
