REPORT: LONDON BRONCOS 10-12 WIDNES VIKINGS

The Vikings returned to winning ways this evening with a hard-fought 12-10 victory over London Broncos at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Despite dominating territory for large spells, Allan Coleman’s side found it difficult to convert pressure into points but ultimately did enough to grind out the result.

The game began in cagey fashion, with both teams battling for momentum in a tense opening period.

The deadlock was eventually broken by Morgan McWhirter, who marked his first start for the club with a try as he took a drop off to power over.

However, the lead was short-lived. On the next set, a pass from Jake Maizen went to ground before being scooped up by Jack Smith, who raced 80 metres to level the scores heading into the break.

Widnes thought they had struck again early in the second half when Rhys Williams dived in at the corner, only for the referee to rule he hadn’t grounded the ball.

Undeterred, the Vikings regained the lead just under ten minutes later as Danny Langtree sliced through from a neat Matty Fozard pass to restore the six-point advantage.

London responded once more, with Smith latching onto a looping ball out wide to grab his second of the evening. The conversion attempt from the touchline rattled the post, preserving Widnes’ slender lead.

The final stages were far from smooth sailing, as a late sin bin for Adam Lawton after making contact with the head meant that the Vikings would have to hold on whilst down to 12.

London had one final chance in the dying seconds, but some great scramble defence wrapped up Alex Walker on the final play of the game to secure a vital 12-10 victory for the Vikings.
