MATTY FLEMING SIGNS 1-YEAR EXTENSION

The Vikings are pleased to announce our latest retention for the new season, as Matty Fleming pens a new one-year contract to remain with the club in 2024.

Scoring four tries across 25 appearances during his second season with the Vikings, Matty is looking forward to a third, hoping that 2024 can be the best yet for both himself and the club.

Speaking with Vikings media, Fleming said; “2023 was a mixed season, both for me personally and as a team. We didn’t reach the levels we should have and it was a real disappointment to miss out on the play-offs.”

“We’ve got to do better in 2024, the fans back us week in, week out and we need to give them a team to be proud of again. The play-offs are an absolute minimum next season.”

Fleming and winger Ryan Ince have formed a consistent partnership this season, and the centre is looking forward to continuing this in 2024.

“Ryan’s a great winger, he’s always there in support or to cover me if I make a mistake, and is reliable in both attack and defence. He’s an excellent finisher too, he was our top scorer last year and he’ll want to get over that try-line even more next season.”

“I’m really looking forward to 2024 under Allan, Tom and Neil. We’ve got to put the past behind us and aim high, and across the squad there’s a lot of anticipation about playing a different style of rugby.”

“I’m pretty sure Widnes haven’t made the play-offs since being relegated from Super League. For a club as big as this, that simply isn’t good enough and we need to set ourselves high standards to go as far as we can in 2024.”

Vikings’ Director of Operations Chris Hamilton is also pleased to have Fleming on board in 2024, saying; “It’s great to retain Matty, his experience and quality will be massive for us next year.

“He’s a player who can operate in numerous positions in our back-line, and an ultimate professional both on and off the field –  he’ll play a massive part of what we want to achieve in 2024.”

With Matty locked in for 2024, keep you eyes peeled over the next few days and weeks as we announce further signings and retentions to the Vikings’ squad. Pre-season is just weeks away too, and we can’t wait to get started as we build towards the new year!
