The Vikings earned a second consecutive Championship victory, beating Sheffield Eagles 10-8 on a blustery afternoon at the DCBL stadium.
With both sides adjusting to the wet and windy conditions, it took 37 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, and it was Rhys Williams who dived in at the corner to give Allan Coleman’s side the lead.
Tom Gilmore added the extras to give the Vikings a six-point lead at the interval.
Shortly after the break, Sheffield responded, a sweeping right-to-left move and a powerful run from Matty Dawson-Jones allowed him to finish in the corner, Aston’s conversion attempt was pulled wide.
In a real war of attrition, it was the Vikings who responded next, a cute kick five metres out from Dec Patton was pounced on by Matt Flemming to restore a six-point lead. Gilmore’s kick was just wide.
The Eagles continued to apply pressure and were rewarded in the 79th minute, as Morgan Smith crashed over to cut the lead to two with a conversion attempt to come.
Following an unsuccessful conversion, there was just about time to kick off but the Vikings held on to secure a 10-8 win.
We now turn our attention to our opening game in the 1895 Cup as we take on Hunslet at the South Leeds Stadium. Tickets are available HERE.
