The Vikings finished their pre-season preparations with a 36-22 victory over Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
A high-scoring affair saw Allan Coleman’s side run in 24 unanswered points in the final half an hour to close out pre-season with a win.
Mike Butt opened the scoring inside the opening 10 minutes as he took Jack Owens’ cut-out pass to dive in at the corner, but the hosts hit back through Alfie Johnson as he claimed a kick from Oli Leyland to score.
Warrington then took the lead through Dan Russell, who strolled in following a short ball from Oli Leyland. The Vikings responded in kind, as Declan Patton found Rhodri Lloyd with a delicate pass to re-establish a two-point lead.
A Vikings error just before the break gave Warrington good field position, and they took advantage straight from the scrum as they moved it left for Jake Thewlis to score in the corner.
The second half started in a similar fashion as another Vikings error from the kick-off was punished with Alfie Johnson bagging a brace over in the right corner to give the Wire a 22-12 lead.
A second-half re-shuffle saw Cam Brown move to Fullback and he immediately made his mark as he chimed in to link up with Mike Butt for a second try, following another impressive pass from Patton in the build-up.
The Wire looked to be in for another not long after but Joe Edge intercepted Leyland’s searching, cut-out pass to Johnson, he was brought down at halfway, but just two plays later he cut inside to score and give the Vikings a two-point lead once again.
Momentum was well and truly with Coleman’s side at this point and they struck again when Dan Murray finished off a move from deep after good linkup play between Tom Gilmore and Joe Lyons.
Those three would link up once more to put the icing on the cake for the Vikings as Murray palmed down Gilmore’s kick into the arms of Lyons to dot down and secure a 36-22 win to close out pre-season.
We now turn our attention to our first competitive fixture of the season next Sunday, as we travel to the Crown Oil Arena to take on Rochdale Hornets in the Second Round of the Challenge Cup. Tickets are available HERE
