Ahead of Sunday’s trip to York City Knights in Round 16 of the Betfred Championship campaign, we take a closer look at this weekend’s opponents.
FORM GUIDE
York go into the game on the back of a 46-10 victory over Swinton Lions a couple of weeks ago, after their 1895 Cup final defeat at the hands of Featherstone Rovers by a scoreline of 34-41.
Sunday’s hosts endured a tough run of form prior to the final, losing five consecutive league games. Their game last week at Sheffield Eagles was postponed due to RFL Covid protocols being followed by Sheffield.
The Knights currently sit three places below Widnes in 11th in the Betfred Championship standings, having won the same amount of games as the Vikings this season (5) but having lost one more.
VIKINGS CONNECTIONS
Second-rower Chris Clarkson spent some time on loan with Widnes in 2015, playing 25 games and scoring four tries on a temporary deal from Leeds Rhinos. Chris played in the Super League and Qualifiers for the Vikings.
ONES TO WATCH
Winger Kieran Dixon has scored 11 tries and kicked 56 goals this season in the league for the hosts, and is currently the league’s top points scorer on 156.
Matty Marsh also has 11 Betfred Championship tries so will be another one to watch from the backs.
HEAD TO HEAD
York were victorious in the reverse fixture this season, defeating the Vikings 14-35 at the DCBL Stadium in Round 6.
Widnes have won three of their last four away games against York, with the victories on the road coming in 2011, 2006 and 2001. The Vikings won the latter game by a scoreline of 11-66.
