Academy: Warrington Wolves 32-10 Widnes Vikings

A promising start was undone by a plethora of errors as our Academy slumped to defeat in their opening game of the season.

Widnes started the half well and were soon on the attack. A Jacob Dugdale pass almost carved an opening score but on six minutes the first try came and what a try it was.

Dan Hill scythed through the Warrington line on half way and his pass found the supporting Dugdale. Dugdale’s inside pass found Cameron Reilly who charged under the posts. Sean Findlow added the extras.

The confident opening continued and then came the turning point of the half. A Ryan Barnes penalty kick failed to find touch and this sparked Warrington into action. They swiftly moved upfield and Luke Broadbent went 35 metres to score.

Three minutes later another move from their own half saw the home side score again and this time it was Sam Thackeray who touched down in the corner.

He was soon in for his second as a good pass saw him in acres of space and Warrington led 12-6.

Warrington’s purple patch continued when Dean Beddall scored and Josh Thewlis added the extras.

Widnes threatened to reduce the arrears before the break but the errors which had dominated their half prevented them from troubling the scoreboard.

Half-time: Warrington Wolves 18-6 Widnes Vikings

Widnes needed to score first in the second half and they duly obliged when Dan Hill, who put in a fine performance, created a try for Harry Parkinson.

Any thoughts that this might be the start of a fight back were dashed when the kick from the restart was dropped and Warrington showed no mercy as Ellis Longstaff scored.

Widnes pressure forced a goal line drop out but they allowed the kick to find touch in their own half and prop Alex Pendlebury went through a yawning gap to touch down under the posts. Reece Briers converted.

More Widnes errors invited the home side to launch attack after attack but the defence held firm until three minutes from time when Tom Inman burrowed over from short range. Briers added the final points of the game.
