We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of lifelong Vikings supporter, Alan Rae.
Alan was Widnes through and through, supporting the club in every way he could through over 70 years’ involvement with us.
Alan’s away days meant many a Vikings fan were able to follow their team up and down the country, and no matter the result at the end of the game he would always be organising the next fixture and looking ahead to support the club.
Alan also represented Widnes fans as Chairman of the Vikings Supporters Club for decades, and was always organising fundraising schemes to help the club.
He was also a member of the Lancashire Federation of RL Supporters’ Clubs, representing Widnes across the sport and organising trips for the federation alongside his commitments to Widnes away travel.
His fundraising schemes helped many young players secure a future in the sport, helping out with the academy, as well as players coming towards the end of their careers planning for a future after rugby by helping out with player testimonials.
He was always kitted out in Widnes gear whatever day of the week, and many supporters will remember his trips to Wembley organised for the Challenge Cup final for over 50 years.
Running his grocery shop in Hough Green, many supporters will remember him from buying tickets for his ‘dream ticket’ draw, another of his fundraising efforts for the club.
He sacrificed so much of his own time and commitments for the pure love of the club, epitomising the true fan and the true gentleman.
In honour of Alan, our players will be wearing black armbands for this evening’s away match against Newcastle Thunder.
The thoughts of everyone at Widnes Vikings are with Alan’s family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time.
