Big Match Preview: Doncaster (H)

Widnes Vikings face a short turnaround in the Betfred Championship as they host Doncaster at the DCBL Stadium on Wednesday (7:30pm kick-0ff).

Allan Coleman’s side will be aiming to put last Friday’s result behind them, after seeing their nine-game winning run come to an end in a 28-10 defeat at home to Oldham.

With little time to dwell on the loss, the Vikings welcome another of the division’s big-hitters in Doncaster, who come into the fixture on the back of a nine-try victory over Halifax Panthers last weekend.

🥊 The opposition

Doncaster enjoyed a strong start to their 2026 Betfred Championship campaign, with just one defeat in their opening three outings, which came in a 26-24 defeat against Midlands Hurricanes.

After bowing out of the Betfred Challenge Cup in a hard-fought 14-0 loss against Super League side Castleford Tigers, the Dons embarked on a seven-game winning run which included a 28-12 victory over the Vikings at the Eco-Power Stadium, with the streak coming to an end at the hands of current league leaders London Broncos in April.

That defeat sparked a shift in momentum for Richard Horne’s side, as they were unable to record a win in the following three outings against Oldham, London in the 1895 Cup semi-final, and more recently Barrow Raiders.

Doncaster have since bounced back with successive victories, which included a 50-12 thrashing of Halifax Panthers most recently.

Doncaster 21-man squad: Jack Ashworth, Cory Aston, Watson Boas, Greg Burns, Bureta Faraimo, Edene Gebbie, James Glover, Tyla Hepi, Tom Holmes, Luis Johnson, Jacob Jones, Brad Knowles, Suaia Matagi, Loui McConnell, Isaac Misky, Muizz Mustapha, Connor Robinson, Sam Smeaton, Alex Sutcliffe, Mitieli Vulikjapani, Tom Whitehead.

⏪ Record against Doncaster

Since their return to the Championship in 2024, the Vikings have met Doncaster six times, with an equal record of three wins and three defeats.

Two of those wins for the Dons came in their most recent outings against Widnes, after beating them 20-16 at the DCBL Stadium in Round 18 of the 2025 Betfred Championship campaign, before sending Allan Coleman’s side back home from South Yorkshire empty-handed following a 28-12 win back in March.

Before 2024, fixtures between the two were sparse. However, the Vikings enjoyed a period of dominance over Doncaster in each of their nine meetings, with the only defeat coming in 2001, as the Dons emerged 18-10 winners away at Widnes in the Northern Ford Premiership.

Last five meetings:

  • Doncaster 28-12 Widnes (Championship R7, 22/3/26)
  • Widnes 16-20 Doncaster (Championship R18, 20/7/25)
  • Doncaster 22-26 Widnes (Championship R4, 23/3/25)
  • Doncaster 30-14 Widnes (Championship R24, 15/9/24)
  • Widnes 16-14 Doncaster (Championship R7, 5/5/24)
