REPORT: DONCASTER 22-26 WIDNES VIKINGS

The Vikings got back to winning ways with a hard-fought 26-22 victory over Doncaster at the Eco-Power Stadium.

In his 100th game as a Head Coach, Allan Coleman’s side came from behind twice in the match to secure a third victory in four league games.

The Vikings hit the front after just five minutes as Martyn Reilly powered over for his first try for the club.

Doncaster wrestled back control of the game midway through the first half however and crossed for back-to-back tries to take the lead.

Bureta Faraimo grabbed the first as he dove in at the corner before Watson Boas backed up a break from Luke Briscoe to score under the posts.

With time expiring in the first half, Cai-Taylor-Wray found Ryan Ince who acrobatically finished in the corner to cut the deficit to two points at half-time.

It didn’t take long after the restart for Ryan Ince to grab another as he finished off a nice blind side switch from Matty Fozard and Jack Owens to give the Vikings the lead again.

However, the lead didn’t last long, with Doncaster hitting straight back through Jacob Jones as he took an offload from Faraimo to score.

The momentum turned in the hosts’ favour as they pushed to find the killer try and extend their lead to two scores.

The Vikings absorbed the pressure and hit back against the run of play. After a kick from Doncaster was knocked to ground, Owens pounced on the loose ball before finding the electric Taylor-Wray who raced 80 metres to score under the posts.

Another try would follow shortly after, as Boas was unable to gather Owens’ grubber kick from close range which allowed Rhys Williams to gather and score to extend the lead to 10 points.

With time running out the Dons pulled one back through Suaia Matagi but it proved to be a mere consolation as the Vikings held on for a vital 26-22 victory on the road.
