Following the final game of the 2022 campaign at Odsal on Sunday, Ste Roberts caught up with Matty Smith to discuss his decision to call time on his career.
Matty described one of the factors in his decision was to go out on his terms after being one of only two ever presents throughout the 2022 season.
Over the course of his Vikings career, “Smeegs” made 67 appearances, scoring four tries and kicking three drop goals.
Matty ends his career having played 376 games in which he amassed 887 points, having played in numerous Grand Finals, Challenge Cup finals and on the international stage.
During his spell at Wigan Warriors, he won the Lance Todd trophy after being named Man of the Match in the 2013 Challenge Cup final victory over Hull FC.
After a career that started at hometown club St.Helens, Smith went on to play for Widnes Vikings, Celtic Crusaders, Salford Reds, Wigan Warriors, Catalans Dragons and Warrington Wolves.
We’d like to thank Matty for his efforts in a Widnes Vikings jersey and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
