Widnes Vikings Women 12-22 Sheffield Eagles

Widnes Vikings Women fell to a 22-12 defeat at home to Sheffield Eagles in the opening round of the Women’s Championship season.

In a hard-fought game with both teams giving their all, two penalties in quick succession took the Eagles the length of the field, resulting in the first try of the game.

This was followed by a handling error shortly after which led to another Eagles try, making it 10 -0.

Widnes then found their game and started to play some good rugby, and the hard work paid off when Anaia Nulty smashed her way over the line with three Eagles players hanging off her.

As the first half was coming to an end, some slick hands from the Eagles saw them score in the corner giving them a half-time lead.

Widnes started the second half the better side, and against the run of play Eagles ran in their fourth try of the game to go further clear.

But that didn’t stop the Vikings Women, who kept the pressure on as Chloe Hunt got herself on the scoresheet, with the conversion added by Aimee Cleaver.

Once Widnes cut some minor errors out, they should be in for a good season.

Special mentions to Olivia Barnard and Rebecca Jones, who both ran the ball in and tackled hard throughout the game.

Jazz Mason was non-stop, as was Aimee Cleaver who worked tirelessly with her creativity from first to last whistle, and Rachael Porter who had a solid second half having returned from a bad injury last season.
