St Helens born Matty had been on the books of Wigan Athletic and Everton before taking up rugby league at the age of 15, playing for Pilkington Recs and Moss Bank Bulldogs prior to joining the Saints Scholarship programme and turning professional at 17. His early career included a loan spell with the Vikings in 2008 prior to establishing himself as a top flight player with Salford and Wigan, before returning to St Helens having won the Challenge Cup in 2013 and appeared in five Super League Grand Finals. Naming his father and Kieron Cunningham as the major influences on his career to date his career highlights include his senior debut, representing England and winning the Lance Todd Trophy in addition to his Finals appearances. Bringing his tactical awareness and strong kicking game to the DCBL Stadium, Matty’s ambition is to help steer the Vikings back to Super League while completing his Coaching qualifications. Away from rugby Everton fan ‘Smeegs’ enjoys most sports and golf in particular.
