Rochdale Past Meetings

5th July 2019

Widnes Vikings take on Rochdale Hornets on Sunday afternoon, looking to make it six straight wins at the Halton Stadium in all competitions.

Kieron Purtill's side will be looking to get back on track following the heavy defeat against Bradford Bulls at Odsal last weekend.

Ahead of Sunday's clash against the Hornets, here’s a look at some of our most recent clashes from recent years....

Rochdale Hornets 4-50 Widnes Vikings - 24th March 2019

The Vikings wiped out their 12-point deduction as they beat Rochdale away. Ryan Ince became the league’s top try scorer, going over 4 times whilst Owens converted 7 goals from 9 attempts on his 150th career appearance.

The Vikings opened the scoring after 5 minutes, just after Tyler Whittaker had stopped Owen Buckley scoring, with Ryan Ince scoring on the other side. A Rochdale surge followed, and as they made their way into Widnes’ half, Tyler Whittaker picked up an offload and used fancy footwork to score.

Soon after a Widnes penalty was awarded, Harrison Hansen found his way over from close range. Widnes were becoming more dominant, with Danny Craven kicking a 40/20, moments before Keanan Brand offloaded to Owen Buckley who touched down in the corner. Ryan Ince went on to score two more tries in the first half to grab his hat-trick.

Widnes dominated the second half completely, with Sam Wilde and Ryan Ince both scored outstanding efforts, both pretty much running the full length of the field, as well as Lloyd Roby scoring the first senior try of his career, chasing down a Joe Lyons kick.

Paul Crook’s converted try put the hornets ahead after Chris Bridge went over for the Vikings, who dominated the rest of the match. Two tries from Kevin Brown and one a piece for Jordan Johnstone, Corey Thompson and Chris Dean made it 28-6 at half-time.

In the second half, Kevin Brown and Chris Bridge completed hat tricks whilst Stefan Marsh, Matt Whitley and Manase Manuokafoa also got on the scoresheet. Bridge also kicked 7 conversions from 12 attempts as the Vikings ran riot at Spotland stadium.

Widnes Vikings 50-10 Rochdale Hornets - 20th February 2011

Widnes beat Rochdale 50-10 to stop the Hornets' progression in the 2011 Northern Rail Cup.

In the first 20 minutes ,the Hornets scored two tries of good quality. Following this, the Vikings stepped it up a notch in the second half and three tries during a 10-minute spell quickly helped them to run away with the tie.

The home side opened the scoring after just four minutes, centre Shane Grady broke through the Hornets’ defence to set up Kirk Netherton, who profited from crossing the whitewash.

Hornets made the perfect response with Craig Ashall catching a McGovern kick to score between the sticks.

There wasn’t much Hornets could do about the Vikings’ second try. Grady played a big part in a good move, which Thomas Coyle finished. Just moments later, the Hornets gave away a cheap penalty 20 metres from their try line, and Danny Craven scored Widnes’ third try. Six minutes later, Rochdale’s Craig Johnson scored a try following a nice passage of play.

Grady got a try just before half time, and just after the break Widnes were gifted a try. Reid lost the ball 30 metres from his own try line allowing Tyrer to score easily. Two tries in quick succession followed for Widnes, from Simon Finnigan and Tangi Ropati respectively. Six minutes from time, Anthony Thackery scored, and Coyle gave the home side their 50 points with a try just before the hooter.

Widnes: Thackeray, Gaskell, Ropati, Tyrer, Gardner, Craven, Coyle, Kavanagh, Netherton, Heckenberg, Grady, Haggerty, Finnigan.

Hornets: English, Johnson, Gorton, Reid, Bloomfield, McGovern, Roper, Cookson, Crook, Peasnall, Ashall, Samuel, Donoghue.

Widnes Vikings 32-0 Rochdale Hornets - 1st July 2007

Darren Abram’s men were nilled for the second time in the space of six weeks, as the Vikings ran out comfortable winners. Rochdale had some good touches of individual play, but the visitors simply could not get going.

The game looked to be pretty much over after 14 minutes. Dodd gave Widnes the lead by running onto a Mick Nanyn ball, and soon after Dennis Moran found Dean Gaskell on the right wing, with Gaskell scoring. Nanyn converted, giving Widnes a 10-point lead.

Wilkes was next to score as Mark Smith's offload gave the forward space to barge over the line. Nanyn failed to convert the try but made up for it soon after when he found Scott Grix with a good ball, Grix using his good footwork to score close to the sticks. Now losing by 20 points, there looked to be no way back for the Hornets.

To credit Rochdale, they didn't stop working in the second period, but they failed to generate any decent field position and it was clear that they didn't have enough creativity. Two tries in three minutes soon followed for the Vikings, the first a Joel Penny walk-in and the second scored by Ian Webster, going over from dummy half. Mick Nanyn converted both trys.

Widnes : Grix, Gaskell, Kohe-Love, Nanyn, Dodd, Moran, Penny, James, Smith, Price, Doran, Wilkes, Beswick., Subs : Webster, Cassidy, Kirk, Lima.

Hornets : Giles, Andrews, Marsh, King, Fagborun, Hasty, Hulse, Bailey, McConnel, Smith, Gorski, Baldwin, Goulden. Subs : Gledhill, Benjafield, Blanchard, Norman.
