Rochdale Match Preview

6th July 2019

The Vikings will be aiming to make it a league double over Rochdale as they face the Hornets at home on Sunday in Round 20 of the Betfred Championship. They also hope to right the wrongs of Sunday’s 62-0 defeat to Bradford at Odsal.

Ahead of Sunday’s home clash where we will take on the Hornets, we have compiled all the team news, stats and key information with our in-depth preview below…

Squad News

Widnes 19-man squad: Patrick Ah Van, Keanan Brand, Hep Cahill, Jay Chapelhow, Ted Chapelhow, Danny Craven, Chris Dean, Jacob Dugdale, Owen Farnworth, Tom Gilmore, Harrison Hansen, Jayden Hatton, Jordan Johnstone, MacGraff Leuluai, Dan Norman, Jack Owens, Lloyd Roby, Brad Walker, Sam Wilde.

Rochdale 19-man squad: Shaun Ainscough, Ellis Robson, Pierre Bourrell, Dan Abram, Callum Marriott, Ben Kilner, Lee Mitchell, Kyle Shelford, Lewis Sheridan, Michael Weldon, Kevin Brown, Oscar Thomas, Callum Wood, Jordan Case, Brandon Wood, Zac Baker, Aidan Gleeson, Izaac Farrell, Adam Lawton.

Form Guide

In the club's last outing, the Vikings were well beaten at Odsal, losing 62-0 to Bradford Bulls. John Kear’s men won comfortably on the afternoon, as they continued their push for the play-offs.

Joe Keyes and Elliot Minchella both claimed hat-tricks as the Bulls ran in 11 tries. Joe Keyes put in a man of the match performance, scoring 3 tries and kicking 9 goal to bring up a total of 30 points himself.

Despite that result, the Vikings remain rock solid on home soil, having won their previous five games at the Halton Stadium in all competitions. They will be looking to continue that trend as the Hornets make the trip on Sunday.

Rochdale head into this fixture with jut one win in the Betfred Championship this season, a Round 5 victory over Barrow Raiders in March.

The Hornets have however changed coach mid-season, with Matt Calland coming in to replace the departing Carl Forster. Despite the results not changing in terms of wins, there have been signs of improvement from the Hornets in recent weeks, and will be looking to build on that when they make the trip to Widnes.

Last Time Out

When the two sides last met at the Spotland Stadium in March this year, the Vikings won comfortably, the final score being 50-4.

The Vikings went into the break leading 28-4, with Ryan Ince grabbing a hat-trick along with a scores for Owen Buckley and Harrison Hansen.

The Hornets get themselves on the board after a try following Ince’s first, but from then on, the Vikings dominated.

In the second half, Ryan Ince grabbed his fourth try and Sam Wilde also got on the scoresheet, both scoring sensational full-length efforts. To round off the afternoon, Lloyd Roby scored the first senior try of his career.

During the game, Jack Owens kicked 7 of his 9 attempts on goal to mark the 150th appearance of his career.

One to watch

Ben Kilner - Following the departure of Ellis Gillam and Ben Morris, the Hornets have signed Ben Kilner from Wigan Warriors. The 20-year-old can play in the second row, and will be a much-needed player when it comes to strengthening Rochdale's back line. He has also spent a period away from the Warriors on loan at fellow Championship side Dewsbury Rams earlier this year.

+ If he is selected in the 17, Owen Farnworth will join the Vikings' Club 20 initiative.
