After an energy sapping defeat last week against Wigan, our U19s produced an excellent display in a highly entertaining game, to defeat a Giants side 32-28, who were unbeaten in eight matches.

Widnes welcomed back Calum O’Neill after concussion, however Dan Hill and Josh Wilde joined an ever growing injury list ensuring the squad was stretched to the limit.

The visitors were soon on the attack and the industrious Joshua Pinder dummied his way through the Widnes defence to open the scoring. He converted his own try to put the Giants six points up.

Widnes responded by forcing a goal line drop out and after 10 minutes levelled matters with a great try. Niall Smith raced down the left wing and his deft kick inside found Lewis Else who collected to go over. Joe Edge landed the difficult conversion.

Huddersfield were held up twice over the line before Widnes scored the try of the game.

Joe Edge pierced the Giants defensive line and raced 80 metres upfield.  As he was tackled he offloaded the ball and Widnes, without panicking, moved the ball from left to right for Liam Barnes to score in the corner. Edge converted from the touchline but their lead was short lived as Lucas Hallas scored the first of his two tries and Pinder’s conversion ensured it was all square at the break

Another excellent try extended the Widnes lead only three minutes into the second half.  An Else kick found Smith just over the half way line. The centre exchanged passes with Ollie Brookes before touching down. Edge, who was imperious with the boot, landed the touchline conversion.

But minutes later, Huddersfield were level again when Hallas scored for Pinder to convert and and it was soon 18-22 when Ross Whitmore was on the end of a good move.

At this stage it looked as though Huddersfield may take control of the game as Widnes were struggling to get anywhere near the try line but when they did they took their opportunity. Jordan Brown forced his way over despite two tacklers and Edge’s conversion gave Widnes a slender two point advantage.

Widnes then forced a goal line drop out and enterprising play on the last tackle saw Smith score wide out. Another fantastic touchline effort by Edge made it 30-22 and two minutes later the game was all but secured when Jacob Dugdale went over and again Edge added the extras.

Huddersfield completed the scoring when Pinder capitalised on a rare Edge error to grab his second try, but despite playing their part in an excellent game, they couldn’t deny the Vikings a victory which they thoroughly deserved.
