After an excellent first half performance, Widnes allowed Barrow back into the game and the home team ran out 12-8 winners in a close exciting game.

The opening minutes of the game saw Barrow camped in the Widnes half but excellent defensive work kept them from crossing the whitewash.  It took 15 minutes before Widnes got anywhere near the Barrow line but when they did they began to take control.  A late tackle on Meg Jackson saw the Vikings opt to take the points on offer and Jackson gave them a slender lead.

Minutes later, an excellent Jackson kick downfield saw Barrow run the ball out from their own line but a forward pass gifted possession to Widnes.  Juliet Porter scooted from acting half back, dummied and extended the lead with a fine try which Jackson converted. The visitors went into the break with a well deserved lead and the promise of bringing the points home.

However, the second half proved a totally different affair.

The kicking game that had served them so well in the opening 40 minutes disappeared and more errors crept into their game.

Barrow, to their credit, looked more threatening and spent most of the half in Widnes territory and the pressure eventually took its toll on the Vikings defence. Influential Emily Stirzaker scored Barrow’s first try, which Jodie Litherland converted.

Five minutes later, Jodie Crawford proved unstoppable from close range and Barrow were in the lead for the first time.

A couple of penalties saw Widnes make inroads into the Barrow half but one of many handling errors let them down and a rare opportunity to create some pressure was lost.

With nine minutes left Barrow were awarded a penalty, for a ball steal, and Litherland made it 12-8.  Widnes had no further chances to try and get something from the game as the home side continued their dominance of the half and that promising opening 40 minutes was consigned to a memory as the final whistle blew.
