Vikings Women 16-14 Oulton Raidettes

8th May 2019

Widnes Vikings Women won their first ever Challenge Cup game with a hard-earned victory against an Oulton Raidettes side which had held them to a draw the previous week.

Oulton were gifted early possession when Widnes fumbled the kick off but they couldn’t take advantage of the error.

Charlie Magraw’s 60 metre run then set the platform for some Widnes pressure and, on the back of a penalty close to the line, they scored the opening try of the game. Nicholette Postlethwaite was held up two metres short and from the play the ball Juliet Porter scooted over.

Widnes were looking confident in attack but an error, near their own line, cost them dearly as Shania Craven touched down.

It didn’t take long for the Vikings to regain the lead though, and it was their turn to benefit from a mistake, as they quickly moved the ball left for Georgina Barnard to score in the corner. A magnificent touchline conversion from Charlie Magraw made it 10-4.

Widnes then lost Abby Latchford and Magraw to injury, but edged further ahead when Hannah Quirk scored after swift passing down the left again.

HALF-TIME: Widnes Vikings 14-4 Oulton Raidettes

Widnes opened the half camped on the Oulton line and thought they’d scored, however Amy Bennett knocked on while reaching over the line, and the chance was lost.

The visitors then made a great break upfield, and Abby Cormack dummied to open the Widnes defence and score the first points of the second half.

Oulton made a mess of the restart and soon after conceded a penalty in front of the posts, with Widnes deciding to take the points on offer with Meg Jackson knocking over, what was to prove, a decisive penalty to make it 16-8.

Errors from both teams then began to affect the flow of the game, and Oulton thought they had scored with 20 minutes of the contest remaining, only for Juliet Porter to produce a brilliant try-saving tackle inside her own in-goal.

With Meg Jackson having to leave the field for the Vikings, joining Magraw, Latchford and Mason on the sidelines, Oulton pressed for another score. They finally found their way over when Widnes gave away possession 20 metres from their own try line, with the influential Frankie Townend scoring under the posts.

She converted her own try and with only two points separating the teams it set up a nervous finish to the tie, however Widnes hung on to secure their place in the second round of the competition.
