Widnes Vikings centre, Keanan Brand, has said that the first team squad know they need to improve if they are to beat Dewsbury Rams on Sunday afternoon.

Brand, who has scored four tries in 12 appearances this season, has impressed massively for the Vikings since playing against Halifax RLFC in February.

Keanan, who is a product of the club’s Academy system, says he has been happy to have a prolonged stay in the Vikings starting line up. This run of games comes after a frustrating start to his first team career, after suffering a broken leg on debut away against Hull Kingston Rovers in 2018.

“It’s been a good year for me on the field this year, as I’ve had a run in the first team and shown people what I’m about and what I can do,” he said.

“Kieron gave me a chance, and ever since that, I feel like I’ve improved game by game.

“I know that there is still sides to my game that I need to train hard and work on, but I feel like there’s more to come from me.”

Brand is part of this young wave of talent that has made its way into the first team squad for the club’s return to the Betfred Championship in 2019. As a member of the first team squad this year, the 20-year old says that it’s a good group to be involved with, and that can only bode well for results on the field.

“This group of young lads that are in the first team at the minute can only be good for us as a club,” he said.

“We have all played together growing up, we’re good mates off-the-field, and I think that’s showing during games. If you put that together with some of the senior boys in the team and what they bring, it’s a good mix.

“Hopefully the majority of the performances and results can continue and we can keep pushing up the table.”

The Vikings head into this weekend’s game against Dewsbury Rams on the back of a mixed Easter Period, following a victory on Good Friday against Leigh Centurions and a Easter Monday defeat to York City Knights.

Keanan says that he and his teammates know that they need to be better across the board on Sunday if the club are to take two points.

“The Easter weekend was both good and bad for us,” he said.

“Leigh at home was probably our best performance of the year, to be honest with you. But for us then to go to York, go 10-0 up, and then not go on and win the game in that second half was disappointing.

“We know that our performance was off, and we need to improve if we’re to get anything from Sunday’s game.”

Brand gave a final mention to the club’s supporters, and the effect that they have had on the lads in 2019 with their tremendous support.

“Our fans have been class with us all year long,” he said.

“They got behind us again in York on Monday, so hopefully they can come down and do the same at home this weekend as well.“
